A Short Detailed Sequential Story Of Every Assassins Creed Assassin

A Short Detailed Sequential Story Of Every Assassins Creed Assassin

March 29, 2019

For well over a decade the Assassin's Creed franchise has become a staple of modern gaming. With its unprecedented freedom of mobility and open world environments that cover a lot of significant moments throughout history, it's no surprise how this franchise has been able to preserve its spot in AAA gaming for so long. Not only has it kept the public's attentiveness for approximately 10 years, but it's also done it with almost annual installments each of which has some of the best storylines of any gaming series.

For anyone who is not familiar with the back story of Assassin’s Creed, and if you're thinking about picking up Assassin's Creed Origins as your first game, I'd have to say you would be doing yourself a great injustice. The franchise's nine first titles represent one of gaming's most extensive and significant storylines. To give you a fundamental understanding of the game revolves around, Desmond Miles is a bartender who finds out that he is the descendant of numerous lines of expertly-trained Assassins throughout history — using the Animus, a device which enables Desmond to travel back in time and relive memories of his ancestry and ancestors using his DNA. Players take control of some of the lethal Assassins known in the AC universe and uncover what secrets each character observed of the mysterious First Civilization and how it has shaped the future that we know today.

Throughout this article, I will be going through every Assassins Creed Video Game character and providing you with a short but detailed backstory as well as the story so far right up until the latest release of Assassin's Creed: Oddessy.

(I purposely did not include Desmond Miles story in this list as I purely want to focus on the assassins of the past and their own stories and the events that took place in their physical lifetime)

(I've tried my best to condense countless hours of story into the shortest article possible, given the copious amounts of information and events that have happened in the Assassins Creed Universe, if you want the full story, I highly recommend playing the games or reading some of the novels)

Let's get straight into as we eagle dive deep into the Animus to look at the all of the Assassins of the Assassin’s Creed video game series thus far.

Altaïr was the first memorable Assassin introduced in the original Assassin’s Creed game. Born in Syria, he served as Mentor to the Levantine Brotherhood and was the first Assassin to discover the ‘Apple of Eden.’ We are originally introduced to Altaïr when he jumps from building to building, trying to stop Robert de Sable from taking a Piece of Eden. Altair succeeds in killing de Sable but soon comes to learn that there is another Templar named Al Mualim, Altair's mentor and head of the Assassins, who has the Piece of Eden. Altair finds and kills him. Obtaining the Piece of Eden signals Altair to the fact that there are many additional artifacts from the previous age spread around the world.

We ultimately discover during the story that a Piece of Eden is an artifact that it was used millennia ago by the First Civilization to overpower and control humans to make them eventually work as slaves for them. These people, known as "The Precursors" were the first beings to call Earth home. They designed the human race and the Pieces of Eden so that they could control their creations. Humans at that time saw these beings as gods.

Learning of Cesare's escape, Ezio takes his new brotherhood of trained assassins to war against Cesare and his men. Ezio comes on out on top and recovers the apple.

Assassins Creed III introduces us to a new assassin named Ratonhnhaké:ton. Also known as Connor, which is of much simpler to pronounce Ratonhnhaké:ton is the first foremost Assassin during the Colonial era. Born to the British Templar Haytham Kenway and Kaniehtí:io. While he was just a young child, he was attacked by Charles Lee and other Colonial Templars endeavoring to find the First Civilization temple which the Kanien'kehá:ka were protecting. His mother was consequently murdered while his home and village are burnt to the ground.

As he grew up Conner become increasingly concerned by the outside world's impact on his people and the murder of his mother, Ratonhnhaké:ton chose to join the Assassin Brotherhood to stop the Templars from returning. He is taught the ways of the Assassin by mentor Achilles Davenport, which is where he assumed the more Western-sounding pseudonym of 'Connor'. During his quest to find the Templars, Ratonhnhaké:ton aided the Patriot movement and defended George Washington, unwittingly becoming an essential figure of the American Revolution.

When he learned that it was Washington, not Lee, who had burned his village and murdered his people, Ratonhnhaké:ton became disenchanted with the Revolutionaries but proceeded using them to aid in the elimination of the Templars. He hesitantly accepted Washington's appeal for help investigating Benedict Arnold and then in disposing of an Apple of Eden he had recovered. The recent conflict saw Ratonhnhaké:ton trapped in an alternate reality created by the Apple, one wherein Washington ruled as king through tyranny. Ultimately, Ratonhnhaké:ton escaped this reality and disposed of Apple.

He then helps the Continental Army stop various Templar plans during the American Revolution. Eventually, Connor confronts his father Haytham, killing him after learning of his background as a Templar. Connor also kills Charles Lee, his mother's murderer and recovers an amulet. Juno appears and explains that Connor must bury the amulet, which he does.

Following Achilles' death and the death of his father, Ratonhnhaké:ton went on to rebuild and lead the Colonial Assassins in the newly formed United States of America. In this capacity, he expanded the Assassin network in the New World and reconnected some previously detached Brotherhoods across the region.

He was trained from a very young age to become an Assassin by his father Edward James Kenway, but after Edward’s death, Haytham was converted to the Templar cause by Reginald Birch. Templar Charles Lee then took young Haytham under his wing – nurturing him over to the dark side, which resulted in him becoming a Grand Master of the Templars.

After being sent to the British colonies in America to locate a suspected First Civilization storehouse, Haytham remained and established a permanent organized Templar presence in the territories. Under his leadership, the Colonial Rite grew exponentially, almost wholly destroying their Assassin counterparts, and manipulating the colonial governments at every level.

Aveline is the heroine in Assassin’s Creed: Liberation, based in New Orleans during the middle of the 18th century. The French-African Assassin embarks on assassination missions to kill Templar members of the Spanish government, who came into power after the French were defeated in the French and Indian War.

Aveline grew into her role as an Assassin, fighting to defend the slaves of New Orleans. At the age of eighteen, she became aware of a slave trafficking enterprise being run in New Orleans by a high-ranking Templar, known only as the "Company Man." Hunting down several of his subordinates, Aveline sought to shut down the Templar's operations and eventually discovered the slaves' destination, a work camp in Chichen Itza.

After she liberated said slave community from Templar influence, procuring a valuable First Civilization artifact in the process, Aveline returned to New Orleans to resume her hunt for the Company Man. Several years later, she journeyed to New York to pursue a lead that would allow her to uncover the Templar's true identity. In this, she was aided by the Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin, Ratonhnhaké:ton, known by his adopted name of Connor. With his help, Aveline discovered the Company Man had been her own stepmother all along.

Following a short confrontation at the de Grandpré mansion, Aveline fled to the Louisiana Bayou to inform Agaté, with disastrous consequences. She then returned to Madeleine, pretending to go along with her induction into the Templar Order, before she assassinated all the members present, thus finally ridding New Orleans of Templar influence.

Edward sailed the seven seas in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - the first AC game to predominantly feature pirate-theme voyages with a vast ocean to sail across, as well as various islands to explore. Born to farmers, Edward had always wanted to acquire riches and fame. He decided to became a privateer for the Royal Navy early in his life and, once accepted, found himself stationed in the West Indies.

However, an abrupt end to the War of the Spanish Succession and the promise of gold, glory, and fame eventually seduced him into a life of piracy. It was during this quest that Edward first encountered the Assassin and Templar orders, and became embroiled in their struggle. Over the next few years, Edward struggled with the internal conflict that arose from his desire for fame and riches through finding the Observatory.

After losing all but a few of his closest friends, he realized the folly of his quest for glory. He then joined the Assassin Order, hunted down the Templars in the region and entrusted the Observatory to the Assassins. After a decade in the West Indies, Edward returned to Britain and received a pardon from Robert Walpole. He soon acquired an estate in London and married Tessa Stephenson-Oakley, with whom he fathered a son named Haytham. He quickly joined the British Brotherhood of Assassins, rising up to the rank of Master Assassin, and eventually, leader. Continuing his work as an Assassin, Edward researched the First Civilization and kept the research in a journal. In 1735, he was killed by mercenaries in the employ of the Templar Grand Master Reginald Birch, to acquire the journal. Haytham would later father Ratonhnhaké:ton;

Close to one year after the events of Black Flag, Assassin’s Creed Rogue let players take control of Irish Assassin Shay Patrick Cormac, based in the North Atlantic during the French and Indian War. Born to Irish immigrants in New York, who died while Shay was still at an early age. He was taken into the Colonial Brotherhood of Assassins by his childhood friend Liam O'Brien, where the two served under the Mentor Achilles Davenport.

In 1751, the Templars stole two Pieces of Eden in the Brotherhood's possession: the Precursor box and the Manuscript. The following year, after acquiring a sloop-of-war, the Morrigan, Shay was tasked with recovering the ancient artifacts. While he and Liam hunted down the Templars in possession of the Pieces of Eden, Shay began to question the Assassins' methods.

After recovering the artifacts, Shay and his fellow Assassin, Hope Jensen, used them to discern the location of a First Civilization Temple in Lisbon. Achilles promptly sent Shay to Lisbon in 1755, believing that the Temple held an Apple of Eden. When he accessed the Temple, however, Shay inadvertently triggered a massive earthquake, leaving thousands dead or homeless. His faith in the Brotherhood shattered, Shay, resolved to keep them from finding more temples by stealing the Manuscript from them, nearly losing his life in the process.

The Templar George Monro had the unconscious Shay brought under the care of Barry and Cassidy Finnegan in New York. Upon recovering, Shay met Monro and his fellow Templar Christopher Gist and began working with them to reclaim the Morrigan and bring down the Assassin-allied gangs of the city. After Monro was killed by Liam in the aftermath of the Siege of Fort William Henry, Shay was inducted into the Templar Order, working with Grand Master Haytham Kenway to help the British Empire win the Seven Years' War and destroy the Colonial Assassins by hunting down his former compatriots.

In 1760, a final confrontation in the Arctic left Liam dead, Achilles crippled and without followers and the Manuscript in Templar's hands. Shay spent the next 16 years searching for the Precursor box, leading him to Versailles, where he killed the Assassin Charles Dorian and reclaimed the artifact in 1776. Since he recovered the artifact, Shay searched for more artifacts and trained both his son and grandson later in life.

Arno is the chief Assassin in Assassin’s Creed Unity, set in Paris between the French Revolution in 1789 and the Thermidorian Reaction in 1794.

Arno Victor Dorian was a member of the French Brotherhood of Assassins and a Master Assassin during the French Revolution. The only known son of Charles Dorian, an Assassin who was murdered by the Irish-American Templar Shay Cormac. Arno was then made a ward of François de la Serre, Grand Master of the French Rite of the Templar Order, and raised alongside his closest friend, Élise.

In May of 1789, Francois de la Serre was murdered at the Palace of Versailles as part of a coup within the French Templar Rite, and Arno was framed for the murder. Imprisoned at the Bastille, he met Master Assassin Pierre Bellec, who told Arno of his Assassin heritage. Overwhelmed with guilt over his past failures, Arno joined the Assassin Brotherhood in the hopes of avenging his father and adoptive father, while also working to uncover the real instigators of the revolution.

Throughout his journey, Arno gained various allies, including Antoine Lavoisier, Marquis de Sade, Georges Danton, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Élise, who had recently been inducted to the Templar Order and sought revenge against her father's murderers. Arno and Élise soon found out that François-Thomas Germain had orchestrated de la Serre's death in the hopes of reforming the Templar Order, and instigated the Revolution to this end. When the Assassin Mentor Honoré Mirabeau accepted an alliance with her on behalf of the Brotherhood, Bellec poisoned Mirabeau and tried to kill Élise as well, forcing Arno to assassinate his former teacher.

After killing most of Germain's subordinates, Arno was exiled from the Assassin Brotherhood and shunned by Élise, causing him to retreat back to the now abandoned and dilapidated de la Serre estate in Versailles. Six months later, Élise found Arno in a drunken, depressed state at the Palace and apologized to him before they both returned to Paris. After killing the remainder of Germain's allies, they tracked him down at the Temple in July of 1794, where a final confrontation ensued. Germain killed Élise using the Sword of Eden, and Arno killed him in return.

Heartbroken over Élise's death, Arno sank into alcoholism and depression once more and ultimately resolved to leave France altogether. To this end, he accepted a mission from the Marquis de Sade in Franciade, where he met a young boy named Léon. Together, they discovered that Napoleon was planning to use an artifact buried beneath the town to take control of France. Initially hesitant to take action, Arno regained his sense of duty and put an end to Napoleon's plans, recovering the artifact–an Apple of Eden–in the process. Arno decided to remain in France and rejoin the Assassin Brotherhood, eventually rising to the rank of Master Assassin. He would sire a child at some point in the future and is an ancestor of Callum Lynch.
