How To Watch The Marvel Movies and TV Series In The Correct Order

April 26, 2019

It's been over a decade since the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie was released, with 2008's Iron Man launching the franchise with its humor, charm and plenty of action-packed fight scenes. Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark first got the ball rolling, looking bad it would have been hard to guess the immense success the Marvel franchise would go on to have over the past ten years.

Throughout more than 20 films so far, it has grown to become a cinematic game-changer, and a mixture of immense star power, monstrous earnings and some of the most creative and gripping blockbuster cinema in recent years have made the MCU a global classic piece of cinema for our generation. With so many films to choose from, and with each one scattered with geeky Easter eggs throughout with references and surprise cameos, it can be tricky to know where to start, particularly if you've joined somewhere in the middle.

Now you have a choice to make, you have two options to see the films in the best order by watching either via release date or in chronological order. Producer Kevin Feige indicated to fans to catch up on the movie in the order they originally opened in cinemas, with the post-credits scenes usually explaining or introducing other films.  This gives the franchise a feeling of rhythm, but unfortunately, it doesn't tell you the story in order of what's happening and when, as most of the movies are set in a separate time period to when they were originally released in. 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger takes place at the end of the Second World War, for example, while Captain Marvel, which came out at the start of March this year, which is set in the mid-90s.

This list will give you a completely comprehensive guide on how to watch each of the Marvel films and TV series in order of when they're set. As it happens, in most instances, the release date and the time period match up correctly, so strap yourself in and get ready to nerd out for exactly 40 hours and 48 minutes, and that just for the movies, tack on another couple dozen hours for the TV series!
